What are Respect Trees?
Respect Trees are a fractal framework designed to facilitate collective decision-making, set priorities, and allocate resources in decentralized communities. At the heart of this system are non-transferable Respect tokens, which community members earn by contributing to their community and playing the Respect Game. This innovative model uses a hierarchical structure similar to a tree where each node represents a decision point or a project that community members can influence. Respect Trees enable community members to vote with Respect on various nodes of the tree to prioritizing projects, proposals, and discussions.
We’re now in the process of developing Respect Trees from a conceptual framework into tooling that can be used to coordinate the Optimism Fractal community and the Optimism Collective. We’re also exploring integrations with various popular platforms, like Notion and Github. We believe that Respect Trees can greatly help the Collective and all organizations coordinate to achieve shared goals. You can learn more in the videos below where we discussed implementing Respect Trees during Optimism Fractal and Eden Fractal events. You can also see the original post about Respect Trees by Tadas (the architect of Respect Trees) and the latest design to learn more. We’re excited to share much more about Respect Trees soon and hope you enjoy the videos below!

Understanding Respect Trees: A New Framework for Enhancing Governance
In the ever-evolving landscape of digital governance, the concept of Respect Trees is emerging as a groundbreaking framework designed to streamline decision-making processes within decentralized communities, particularly within the Optimism Fractal ecosystem. This innovative approach aims to harness the collective intelligence of the community to prioritize and execute projects more effectively.
What are Respect Trees?
Respect Trees are a methodological approach used to organize and prioritize community projects by leveraging a respect-weighted voting system. This system enables community members to influence the direction of projects based on their level of contribution and engagement. The primary goal of Respect Trees is to create a transparent and democratic platform where every voice matters and every contribution can be accurately assessed and rewarded.
Process and Implementation
The implementation of Respect Trees involves several key steps, carried out over a defined period known as a "season," which aligns with the cycles of retroactive public goods funding (RetroPGF). Here’s how it works:
- Project Listing and Prioritization: At the start of each season, the community identifies and lists key projects for the Optimism Fractal. These projects are then prioritized based on respect-weighted polls, where members allocate their votes according to the significance they believe each project holds.
- Contribution and Evaluation: Throughout the season, community members work on these prioritized projects. Towards the end of the season, contributions are evaluated based on their impact and alignment with the community’s goals.
- Reward Allocation: Based on the evaluations, lists are created to determine the distribution of RetroPGF rewards. These rewards recognize the efforts and contributions of community members, incentivizing further participation and innovation.
Benefits of Respect Trees
The implementation of Respect Trees within the Optimism Fractal ecosystem offers numerous benefits:
- Enhanced Clarity and Direction: By clearly defining and prioritizing projects, Respect Trees help community members understand where their efforts are most needed, reducing uncertainty about what to work on.
- Decentralized Consensus: The respect-weighted polling mechanism ensures that decision-making is decentralized and reflective of the community's collective priorities and values.
- Incentivization of Contributions: The alignment of project rewards with community evaluations under the RetroPGF system encourages ongoing participation and engagement from developers and contributors.
- Dynamic Adaptation: The framework allows for continual improvement and adaptation based on the outcomes of each season, ensuring that the governance structure remains responsive to the community’s evolving needs.
A Fractal Approach to Governance
Beyond individual project management, Respect Trees facilitate a broader ecosystem of governance experiments. By encouraging the development of smaller fractals using similar governance software, the system promotes innovation at all levels. These smaller fractals can experiment with new ideas and tools, which, if successful, can be integrated into the larger Optimism Fractal framework.
This fractal governance structure not only mitigates risks by allowing for the testing of new approaches in smaller settings but also enhances the overall agility and responsiveness of the governance model.
Conclusion
Respect Trees represent a significant step forward in the design of governance systems for decentralized communities. By providing a structured yet flexible approach to decision-making and reward distribution, Respect Trees help ensure that governance processes are more transparent, equitable, and effective. As this model continues to evolve, it holds the promise of transforming how decentralized projects are managed, making them more responsive to the needs and aspirations of their communities.
Integrating Respect Trees with Notion and GitHub
To maximize their potential, Respect Trees can be seamlessly integrated with tools like Notion and GitHub, making these platforms even more powerful for community governance.
Using Notion with Respect Trees
Notion can be adapted to serve as a central hub for governance by integrating APIs that allow Respect token holders to vote on various aspects of community management. Community members can upvote projects, tasks, and discussion topics, ensuring that the most relevant and impactful ideas are prioritized. This setup not only fosters a democratic environment but also enhances the organization by keeping all decision-related documents in one accessible place.
Leveraging GitHub with Respect Trees
GitHub, a platform primarily used for code repository and version control, can also benefit from the integration of Respect Trees. By utilizing GitHub’s issue tracking and project management tools in conjunction with Respect-based voting, communities can ensure that the most critical developments are fast-tracked and that contributors who offer the most value are recognized and rewarded. This integration encourages a meritocratic approach to project development and can drive significant advancements in community projects.
Respect Trees can integrate with digital platforms such as Notion and GitHub, enhancing them with governance capabilities that reflect the community’s preferences and the intrinsic value of each member's contributions.

Synergies with Global Governance Models
While Respect Trees facilitate many smaller, routine decisions through community input, they complement more traditional governance models, such as councils composed of highly respected members. These councils handle strategic, large-scale decisions and provide a balance between high-level oversight and grassroots participation. This dual approach ensures that while major decisions are managed by experienced individuals, the broader community remains actively involved in everyday governance tasks.
Benefits of Respect Trees in Community Governance
- Enhanced Engagement: Integrating with tools like Notion and GitHub invites members to participate in governance through platforms they are familiar with, thereby lowering barriers to entry.
- Increased Transparency: Decisions made through Respect Trees are transparent and based on quantifiable contributions, enhancing trust within the community.
- Scalability and Flexibility: The model adapts effortlessly to the community’s size and can be applied to various decision-making needs.
- Comprehensive Governance: By combining Respect Trees with a council-based model, communities can achieve a holistic governance strategy that accommodates both macro and micro-level decisions.
Overall, Respect Trees offer a scalable and flexible solution to govern and make decisions democratically, ensuring transparency and inclusivity in community-driven initiatives.
What is a methodical approach and a comprehensive framework?
ChatGPT
A methodical approach refers to a systematic, organized way of doing something according to a well-planned strategy or procedure. In this context, it involves following a series of structured steps or methods that ensure tasks are performed consistently and effectively, leading to reliable outcomes. A methodical approach often includes clear protocols, predefined steps, and regular evaluations to optimize the process and achieve the desired results.
A comprehensive framework, on the other hand, is an overarching structure or system designed to encompass all necessary aspects of a topic or project. It provides a broad, integrative base that not only organizes and structures information and processes but also guides decision-making and strategic planning. A comprehensive framework typically includes principles, guidelines, tools, and standards that apply across various scenarios and help in achieving consistency and efficiency in implementation. It offers a holistic view that addresses multiple dimensions of a problem or a system, ensuring all relevant factors are considered.
In the context of something like Respect Trees, using these terms implies:
- The methodical approach ensures that the process of voting and decision-making is systematic and repeatable, providing a reliable way for members to engage with the governance of the community.
- The comprehensive framework provides all necessary guidelines, tools, and procedures for implementing Respect Trees within any community or organization, accommodating various scenarios and adapting to specific needs.
